Everyday Basics

A stable basics aisle became afresh-brand rout.

Eighty-five percent of the top ten turned over in three weeks. That number belongs to Everyday Basics, the most reshuffled corner tracked across Fashion & Footwear. Of 364 brands in the category, 156 have debuted since tracking began. The ground moves fast here.

The category runs five buyer intents beneath it. That spread gives a brand more than one way in — and more than one way out.

We take one category apart in depth as our history deepens. This season, Everyday Basics earned the slot: more of its top ten turned over than any other corner of the catalogue — 85% of the top ten turned over.

The movement

Who climbed, who slipped, who arrived.

Darn Tough climbed 21 spots, from 32 to 11. Reigning Champ climbed 18, from 28 to 10. Patagonia climbed 16, from 22 to 6. Moving the other way: Gildan slipped 23 spots, from 3 to 26. The leaderboard churned.

The number-one spot changed hands twice in three weeks. lululemon, SKIMS, Patagonia, and Nike were all in that race. The models could not hold a consensus at the top. Two crossings in 21 days is a signal: the assistants read this category as unsettled.

The split of the season

Same question, different answers.

Ask the assistants for the best heavyweight t-shirt and they return four different answers. Claude picked the 1017 Garment-Dyed Heavyweight Tee. OpenAI picked the Classic T-Shirt. Perplexity picked the Field Spec Heavy-Cotton Tee. Gemini picked the Max Heavyweight Garment Dye T-Shirt. One question, four number-one picks. The machines do not agree on what heavyweight even means in practice.

Lens 02 · Google reviews

The crowd saw it first.

The crowd and the models pull in opposite directions on three brands. Uniqlo earns 4.8 stars from reviewers and the models rank it 17th. The North Face carries 4.6 stars across more than nine thousand reviews and sits 25th in the model rankings. Under Armour splits the gap — 4.7 stars from 738 reviews, ranked 7th by the models. Running the other way: Carhartt holds 3.9 stars from the crowd but the models keep it at 5th.

The rivalries

Two fights that defined the window.

The crown · 1 lead changes

lululemon and SKIMS sit at the top of the category.

The structural fight
Incumbents
vs
Fresh / upstart

The fresh-upstart band took 50 points of the top ten from the incumbents over the window.

The shape of the shift

What actually moved underneath the leader.

The segment numbers tell the story plainly. Incumbents held 90 percent of the top ten in the first week. By the last week they held 40. Fresh and upstart brands went from nothing to 50 percent. Premium held flat at 10. That is a 50-point swing in three weeks. The incumbents did not lose ground slowly.

The editor's read

The window shows a category that moved faster than the models expected. Gildan and Champion fell hard. Darn Tough and Reigning Champ arrived from outside the conversation. lululemon and SKIMS are fighting for a crown the models cannot keep stable. The edge next belongs to whichever brand the assistants agree on first — and right now they do not agree on much.

What to watch next season
  • 01Whether lululemon or SKIMS holds the number-one spot through the next tracking window
  • 02Whether Uniqlo recovers from 13th despite its 4.8-star crowd rating
  • 03Whether Darn Tough and Reigning Champ hold their new positions or slip back below 20
