Pantry & Condiments

A pantry aisle that stood still for years became a three-name race.

By the Radar desk·3 min read·throughAIGoogleYouTube

1442 brands sit in Pantry & Condiments and 1259 of them showed up after tracking began. Eleven weeks in, the top ten looks almost nothing like the one that started it.

Three brands took the #1 spot over that stretch. California Olive Ranch held it in week one and now sits at #3. Butternut Mountain Farm and Crown Maple walked in fresh on Jun 29 and never left the top ten. Old names slipped. New names arrived. The shelf turned over.

We take one category apart in depth as our history deepens. This season, Pantry & Condiments earned the slot — picked on a weighted read of rank movement, AI disagreement and reviewer coverage.

The movement

Who climbed, who slipped, who arrived.

Trader Joe's climbed from #32 to #19, Cobram Estate from #14 to #6, Secret Aardvark from #28 to #20. Yellowbird fell from #7 to #18 and Tabasco from #2 to #12, while California Olive Ranch slid just two spots, #1 to #3. On Jun 29 three newcomers landed at once: Butternut Mountain Farm at #4, Crown Maple at #7, Maldon at #8.

Lens 01 · The AI panel

The leaderboard churned.

The #1 spot changed hands three times in eleven weeks. Kirkland Signature, Cholula, California Olive Ranch and Butternut Mountain Farm all took a turn at the top. No single brand held the lead for long. The rank race stayed open the whole window.

The split of the season

Same question, different answers.

Ask the panel for the best hot sauce and you get five different answers. ChatGPT named Scorpion Sauce. Claude named Original Black Truffle Hot Sauce. Gemini went with Sriracha Sauce, the Green Dragon Blend 2026. AI Mode and Perplexity landed on the same pick, Original — the one point of agreement in the field.

Lens 02 · Google reviews

The crowd saw it first.

The category runs a 4.7-star average, and the crowd's three favorites all outrank their AI placement. Tabasco holds 4.8 stars across 5,300 reviews but sits at #12 with the models. Yellowbird holds 4.8 stars and sits at #18. Trader Joe's holds 4.8 stars on just 191 reviews and sits at #19. The buyers rate these three higher than the panel ranks them.

The cross-check

Where the machines and the room part ways.

The panel puts Original Hot Sauce at #2 while human reviewers stay cooler on it — a clear overrate. Miller's Blend Extra Virgin Olive Oil sits at #19 with the AI panel while humans rate it warmer, a sleeper the panel is underselling. Where the two sides agree: Habanero Hot Sauce at #3 and Original Cayenne Pepper Sauce at #9, both matched across AI and human read.

Overrated by the machines

AI ranks them high — reviewers + buyers cooler.

Sleepers the AIs miss

Humans rate them top — the models rank them low.

Overrated = the AIs rank it well above what reviewers and buyers do; sleepers = the humans’ favourites the models still rank low; consensus = where both land together.

Lens 03 · Video reviews

Where the cameras pointed.

Trader Joe's took half of all tracked creator coverage in the category, 50% of 25 reviews. Kirkland Signature and Cobram Estate split the rest evenly, 25% each. Creator attention followed the same names climbing the rank race, not the ones falling out of it.

The rivalries

The structural fight
Incumbents
vs
Fresh / upstart

The fresh-upstart band took 50 points of the top ten from the incumbents over the window.

The shape of the shift

What actually moved underneath the leader.

Incumbents held the entire top ten in week one, 100% to 0%. By the last week the fresh and upstart brands had taken half the field, 50-50. That is the real shape of the eleven weeks: not one brand's fall, but a whole band of newcomers pulling even with the old guard.

The editor's read

Pantry & Condiments looked settled and wasn't. A category with 1442 brands and three changes at #1 in eleven weeks isn't a shelf, it's a contest. The incumbents still hold half the ground. The fresh brands took the other half fast. Whoever wins the next window will be decided by which side moves quicker, not which side started stronger.

What to watch next season
  • 01Whether Butternut Mountain Farm holds #1 or gets caught by Kirkland Signature and Cholula again.
  • 02Whether Tabasco and Yellowbird recover ground the AI panel has already given away, given their crowd scores.
  • 03Whether the fresh-upstart share keeps climbing past 50% or the incumbents push back.
