Coffee

The top ten held steady for years then five newcomers kicked the door in.

By the Radar desk·3 min read·throughAIGoogle

882 brands sit in the coffee category. Over 15 weeks, 793 new ones showed up, and the top ten turned over 55 percent. That is not a category. That is a churn machine.

Intelligentsia Coffee climbed from #7 to #1. It did that while carrying a 3.9-star average, cooler than most of the field. Meanwhile Death Wish Coffee, the crowd's 4.8-star favorite with 15,000 reviews behind it, fell from #4 to #19. The models and the buyers are reading different menus.

We take one category apart in depth as our history deepens. This season, Coffee earned the slot — picked on a weighted read of rank movement, AI disagreement and reviewer coverage.

The movement

Who climbed, who slipped, who arrived.

Heart Coffee Roasters climbed 57 spots, from #84 to #27. Klatch Coffee climbed 21, from #50 to #29. Caribou Coffee slipped 17, Death Wish Coffee and Starbucks each slipped 15. Atlas Coffee Club, Trade Coffee, and Counter Culture all arrived fresh, none of them in the category on day one.

Lens 01 · The AI panel

The leaderboard churned.

The rank race ran among four brands: Intelligentsia Coffee, Lavazza, Stumptown Coffee Roasters, Blue Bottle Coffee. The #1 spot changed hands twice in 15 weeks. Intelligentsia Coffee closed the gap from #7 and took the crown. Stumptown held #3 the whole way, propped up by model confidence that outran its own 4.2-star crowd rating.

The split of the season

Same question, different answers.

Ask the panel for the best espresso beans and you get six different answers from six assistants. ChatGPT picked Big Trouble Espresso. AI Mode picked Roasters Bedford Espresso. Claude picked Classico Espresso Whole Bean. Perplexity picked Black Cat Classic Espresso. Gemini and Grok both landed on Super Crema Whole Bean Coffee, the one point of agreement in the field.

Lens 02 · Google reviews

The crowd saw it first.

The category runs a 4.5-star average, but the panel does not follow it. Death Wish Coffee sits at 4.8 stars with 15,000 reviews and lands at #19. Kicking Horse Coffee holds 4.7 stars and lands at #11. Bean Box holds 4.7 and sits at #14. Intelligentsia Coffee runs hot in the other direction: 3.9 stars, and still #1.

The cross-check

Where the machines and the room part ways.

Black Cat Classic Espresso rides high with the AI at #1 despite reviewer scores of 3.5 out of 5 and buyer scores of 4.2 stars, cooler than the panel's enthusiasm. Bean Box Coffee Subscription gets the same treatment at #4. On the other side, Decaf Caribou Blend sits at #27 while humans rate it warmer, and Super Crema Espresso sits at #19 carrying the same gap. Where the AI and the humans do agree: Super Crema Whole Bean Coffee at #6, and Hair Bender Blend at #13.

Owners vs the algorithm

What owners flag months in.

Hair Bender Blend holds a clean 4.3-star average and the AI ranks it #13. But three forum threads flag sour notes that dominate the cup, calling it hard to balance sweetness and body. That complaint does not show up in the star average. It shows up only after weeks of drinking the bag down.

The rivalries

The fights that defined the window.

The crown · 7 lead changes

Intelligentsia Coffee and Lavazza sit at the top of the category.

The structural fight
Incumbents
vs
Fresh / upstart

The fresh-upstart band took 20 points of the top ten from the incumbents over the window.

The shape of the shift

What actually moved underneath the leader.

The top ten opened the window at 100 percent incumbents. It closed at 80 percent. The fresh-upstart band took 20 points off the old guard, brand by brand, week by week — not a collapse, a slow bleed.

The editor's read

Coffee rankings used to reward the name everyone already knew. Now the panel rewards something else, and it is not always what the buyer holding a 4.8-star bag would pick. Intelligentsia Coffee has the crown for now, but the crown changed hands twice already. Watch Lavazza. Watch the door the newcomers walked through.

What to watch next season
  • 01Whether Intelligentsia Coffee holds #1 through the next window or the crown changes a third time.
  • 02Whether Heart Coffee Roasters and Klatch Coffee keep climbing into the top ten proper.
  • 03Whether the fresh-upstart share keeps eating into the incumbent 80 percent.
