This week?

Gel-Kayano 32 holds at #1 for running shoes built for flat feet. GT-2000 13 made the biggest climb this sweep, while Glycerin GTS 22 fell hardest. Two newcomers arrived on the board: Beast 24 and 860v15. The top rankings shifted enough to matter—Gaviota 5 also moved up as Hurricane 26 dropped.

What AI values here

Flat-footed runners should prioritize stability and cushioning over everything else; those two traits show up across nearly all top picks, while lighter weight and extra arch support matter less consistently.

context & history

Flat feet compress the arch until it sits lower and rolls inward on impact, and that inward roll — overpronation — is what pushes runners toward this question. Most people arrive here after a nagging ache in the shin, knee, or lower back on long runs, or after a fitting where someone mentioned "arch collapse." The underlying worry is rarely the flatness itself; it's whether unsupported footwear lets the ankle and knee twist out of line over repeated strides, and whether that strain travels upward into the hips or spine over time.

The real trade-off is how much correction a shoe imposes versus how much cushioning it preserves. Firmer stability builds and dedicated motion-control constructions resist the inward roll directly, but a shoe pushed toward maximum stability or j-frame-style support can feel rigid and heavy underfoot, trading lightweight stability for control.

What the buying guides say.

What the buying guides say

Flat feet need structure, not just softness. Look for a shoe that resists collapse through the arch and holds your foot steady from heel to toe.

  • Look for firm, dense support along the inside of the shoe, not just a soft pad under the arch. This resists the foot rolling inward better than cushioning alone.
  • Check the base width. A shoe with a wider platform through the midfoot keeps a flat arch from hanging over the edge of the sole.
  • Favor a sturdy heel counter and guide-rail structures on both sides of the shoe if you notice your foot rolling inward as you walk or run.
  • Try the shoe on and walk around for a while before deciding. Structure that feels stiff at first often proves comfortable over distance, while plush shoes can feel good briefly then cause arch or ankle ache later.
  • Match the shoe's stiffness and heel-to-toe drop to your own build and any existing pain. Heavier or harder-loading feet do better with firmer, more stable shoes.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Don't choose a shoe just because it feels like a marshmallow in the store. Soft, plush cushioning can bottom out and leave the arch unsupported after extended wear.
  • Don't ignore toe box shape. A narrow or tapered front can pinch a wider flat foot and cause discomfort even if the rest of the shoe fits.
  • Don't assume one width will fit. Flat feet are often wider through the midfoot, so a standard width can let the arch spill over the sole edge.
  • Don't overlook heel-to-toe drop if you have Achilles or forefoot pain. A high drop shifts more pressure forward and can aggravate those conditions.

Questions buyers ask.

  • What type of running shoe is best for flat feet?

Flat feet need a shoe with firm, structured support along the inside to resist inward roll, combined with a wide platform through the midfoot to keep your arch from collapsing. Reviewers emphasize that stability matters more than softness alone—a sturdy heel counter and guide-rail support on both sides work better tha…

  • Are Hoka or Brooks better for flat feet?

Both brands have top-ranked options, but they differ in approach. The Brooks Adrenaline GTS 25 and GTS 24 emphasize a guide-rail support system and reliable stability, though reviewers note the GTS 25 trades breathability for comfort and can feel overly firm in the forefoot on long runs. The Hoka Gaviota 5 prioritizes…

  • Which shoe is best if durability is a concern?

The Gel-Kayano 31 and Adrenaline GTS 24 both have strong buyer ratings for durability and material quality. Reviewers note the Gel-Kayano 31 has reinforced eyelets and a reliable build, while the GTS 24 owners praise long-lasting outsole rubber. The Gaviota 5, Omni 22, and Guide 18 all face durability complaints—ankle…

  • What's the catch with the most comfortable flat-foot shoes?

The Gaviota 5 offers immediate pain relief and plush comfort that buyers love, but durability is inconsistent—ankle padding wears fast, and quality varies between retailers. The Gel-Kayano 31 feels plush and secure but runs warm in hot weather and feels bulky to some wearers. The Adrenaline GTS 25 is well-cushioned an…

The Adrenaline GTS 25 is specifically noted by reviewers as suitable for standing all day, running, or moderate mileage—it's a dependable daily trainer. The Gel-Kayano 31 works well for easy and long runs and is built for daily training. The Guide 18 is reliable for easy-to-moderate mileage and everyday wear. The Gavi…

  • Do these shoes feel stiff at first, or comfortable right out of the box?

The Gaviota 5 and Adrenaline GTS 24 are noted by buyers as immediately comfortable with no break-in period—no blisters or rubbing from the start.
