Most microwaves came after World War II. Percy Spencer worked at Raytheon in Massachusetts. He stood near a magnetron and noticed a chocolate bar in his pocket had melted. That led to the first commercial microwave in 1947. Today the choice comes down to wattage, capacity, and build. Panasonic, Breville, and Tappan make units that hold heat well. LG and Samsung add sensors that adjust power. The real difference is in the magnetron and how the box distributes the waves. A 1000-watt unit heats faster than 600 watts. A fourteen-inch turntable handles more than a ten-inch one. Weight matters too. Heavier units usually mean thicker insulation and better parts.
