What reviewers say

Distilled from the video reviewers — the score, what they praise, where they push back.?

Anacapa 2 Low GTX
across 5 reviews
4.0/5
mixed
Reviewers praise
  • Vibram Megagrip outsole with deep lugs delivers confident traction on mud, rock, and loose terrain
  • HOKA's meta-rocker geometry and thick cushioned midsole make the shoe feel unusually comfortable and efficient for long days on foot
  • Gore-Tex waterproofing handled submersion and wet grass without water intrusion
Reviewers push back
  • Heavier than comparable trail and hiking offerings, which reviewers flag as a trade-off worth knowing
  • Swallow-tail heel extension can snag roots and rocks on technical downhill terrain
  • Mesh side panels improve breathability but leave that area vulnerable to sharp objects
Reviewers broadly agree the Anacapa 2 Low GTX is an exceptionally comfortable, well-cushioned hiking shoe with reliable waterproofing and grip, representing a meaningful upgrade over its predecessor.
— best for: Day hikers and outdoors-focused walkers who prioritise cushioning, waterproofing, and all-day comfort over minimal weight or aggressive technical performance.

mixed
Reviewers praise
  • DNA Loft V3 midsole delivers cushioning that is plush enough for long efforts without becoming mushy or losing responsiveness
  • Generously wide toe box accommodates a broad forefoot and reduces compression and numbness on long runs
  • Trail Tack rubber with medium-depth lugs grips reliably on dry rock, hard pack, roots, and wet rock in most mixed-terrain conditions
Reviewers push back
  • Lugs clog in thick clay or heavy mud and shed dirt poorly, limiting performance in dedicated mud conditions
  • The midfoot can feel snug out of the box and requires a break-in period before the fit opens up fully
  • Midsole softens gradually with high mileage, though reviewers disagree on how significant the degradation is
It's optimally cushioned but not overly plush at the same time.
Mountaineer Journey · best for Runners and hikers who cover technical, mixed-terrain trails and want a durable, well-cushioned shoe with a wide toe box, solid rock protection, and reliable all-conditions grip.
Reviewers disagree · Anacapa 2 Low GTX?
Road Runner Sports 4.5/5
Engearment 3.5/5

Reviewers differ on ankle support needs: some find the low version completely adequate for stability, while others prefer the mid for more aggressive terrain

Reviewers disagree · Cascadia 19?
Mountaineer Journey 4.5/5
RunLetters 3.5/5

Cushioning firmness divides opinion: the hiker reviewer finds it on the firmer, confidence-inspiring side, while the trail runner reviewer emphasises its softness relative to previous versions — both impressions are accurate but shaped by different reference points

I purchased these Hoka Anacapa 2 Low GTX as I wanted a water-resistant walk/trail shoe. Had tried others but with the Gore-Tex insert, they fitted tight. These fit well enough to take the wool socks I wear from time to time. The toe section is large enough for me to feel comfortable. They are also super supportive. The Vibram sole is a great move as they tend to last a long time. I put them on, ou Anonymous · svpsports.ca

For someone who has rheumatoid arthritis and prior to this has osteoarthritis in my knee I would confidently say these are the most comfy shoes I've ever walked in. The Cascadia 19 is a great cross between a trail shoe and a jogger, sturdy, light and super comfortable. The rum and raisin colour scheme makes them great to wear with anything without looking too sporty. All up I would highly recommen brooksrunning.com.au
