Critics & buyers

What reviewers say

Distilled from the video reviewers — the score, what they praise, where they push back.?

Roomba j9+
across 5 reviews
3.5/5
divided
Reviewers praise
  • Substantially increased suction power over previous iRobot generations, with deep-clean carpet performance that impressed multiple reviewers
  • Auto-retract mop arm reliably lifts the pad onto the robot's back over carpet, preventing wet-carpet problems that competing designs struggle with
  • Smart Scrub mode — back-and-forth downward-pressure mopping — handled dried-on stains noticeably better than spinning-pad competitors in controlled tests
Reviewers push back
  • Mop pad must be washed manually after each run; the dock does not clean or dry it
  • Navigation runs longer than some competing robots, and the initial mapping pass takes noticeably more time
  • Filter is not washable and requires periodic replacement; reviewers found the 60-day claim optimistic under real pet-hair loads
The Roomba j9+ earns strong marks for vacuuming power, obstacle avoidance, and its auto-retract mopping system, but reviewers flag navigation inefficiencies, manual mop pad cleaning, and a non-washable filter as real-world friction points.
— best for: Pet owners and busy households who want the most thorough hands-off vacuuming available in a robot, with same-run vacuum-and-mop capability and don't mind a brief manual mop-pad rinse after each cleaning cycle.

3.6/5
Reviewers praise
  • Extremely powerful suction measured at 22-25 CFM, the highest among tested robot vacuums, with outstanding carpet deep-cleaning that extracted over 90% of embedded sand
  • D-shaped design with 30% wider front-mounted brush rolls reaches edges and corners far better than round robots, leaving minimal gaps along walls
  • Dual rubber extractors handle hair exceptionally well with minimal tangling, requiring only simple maintenance instead of cutting hair from bristles
Reviewers push back
  • Navigation uses older VSLAM camera technology that is slower and less methodical than lidar, requiring lights on and sometimes multiple mapping runs
  • Battery life suffers significantly in high-power mode, often requiring mid-clean recharges that extend total cleaning time to several hours for modest homes
  • Struggles audibly with larger debris, making crunching noises and showing it does not handle bigger particles smoothly
Reviewers agree the s9+ delivers exceptional cleaning performance with the strongest suction and best deep-cleaning ability they have tested, though it comes with navigation quirks and a high price.
— best for: Best for pet owners and those with significant carpeting who prioritize deep-cleaning performance and want automated maintenance without manual dustbin emptying.

Vacuum Wars 4.5/5
Erin Lawrence 3.0/5

Suction relative to older iRobot hardware divides reviewers: Vacuum Wars and Digital David found the power genuinely best-in-class, while The French Glow argues carpet performance still trails the older S9 due to a smaller brush roll and lower airflow

Reviewers disagree · Roomba s9+?
Unbox Therapy 4.3/5
Android Headlines - Android News & Tech News 3.0/5

Some reviewers found navigation adequate and thorough despite being camera-based, while others felt it lagged noticeably behind lidar precision and satisfaction

We picked up this iRobot Roomba because Sam's has the best prices in the world. The reviews pre-purchase were pretty solid. We did not get one with an automatic Dust Bin emptier because it doubles the unit cost and adds paper bags that you have to buy, throw away and replace $$. For all of its smarts, it does some wonky things like going into areas it's not supposed to after you've created Spaces/ ahg3rd · samsclub.com

I’ve had my Roomba S9 for two years and it was the best investment I could have made for my home. It keeps my house clean daily by running around my house everyday. The face that it empties itself makes the process so much better. I like how effortless it is to use it. The smart capability lets me control it when I’m away from home. It is a magnificent product.
