Both buyers and video reviewers cite wood quality and durability as the product's weakest point, with paint chipping and splintering being safety concerns.

In their words

great back-to-basics toy that engages gross and fine motor skills as well as cognitive skills and problem solving. I love that it's made of wood but is still colorful and fun which keeps my baby's attention. I am laughing at these reviews... #1 on the list is complaining about having to show a toddler how to do something? smh... feel like that's the point when you're raising a child. 2nd place goe

Reality · verified purchase · Target

This is one of the worst quality Melissa and Doug toys I’ve owned. The wood is pretty rough and seems unfinished, the blocks are soft wood and chip/splinter easily. I also find it weird that there’s odd shapes included but no circle. The square is not equal on all sides. It’s good for a puzzle but not great for teaching basic shapes which I think is an important part of a shape sorter.
