The verdict

What the panel makes of it.

The Altra Olympus 5 ranks #15 for best trail running shoes and delivers genuine comfort and cushioning that owners praise, but durability is a major weak point—some log hundreds of miles without issue while others see premature outsole degradation, a risk worth weighing at $170.

In their words

A terrific looking shoe! Loved the look and colour choice, max cushion on long days in the trails and plenty of grit to get through the mud and debris the trails throw at you. Very comfortable and I look forward to many long races in these. As with other Varuste purchases, it was great priced, fast shipping and no issues whatsoever - highly recommend the shoes and specially the shop. KITOS!

I have had 2 pairs of Olympus shoes and both pairs have fallen apart a few months after getting them. It blows my mind that this company is owned by VF corporation (publicly traded - The North Face, Vans, Timberland, Supreme, Dickies, etc) . . but yet they continue to use a fabric that obviously has no durability. Read the reviews and over 1/2 of the them talk about the shoes falling apart . .

maximum cushioned trail running shoe

In reality

Excellent cushioning, poor outsole durability

What the data shows

Owners consistently praise the cushioning as excellent for trail running, but the shoe's durability and outsole degradation issues undercut the claim of being a reliable maximum-cushioned option.

TractionVibram Megagrip outsole for superior traction on the trailsMixed
What the data shows

While traction and grip score 4.2/5 from owners and one reviewer praises the shoe's ability to handle mud and debris, the severe outsole degradation reported by many owners undermines the claim of superior traction durability.

Upper Materialbreathable upper that is resilient for the trailsMixed
What the data shows

Owners rate fit and aesthetics highly (4.3/5 and 4.4/5 respectively), but the sharp divide on durability and outsole degradation suggests the upper material's resilience for trail conditions is compromised by overall shoe longevity issues.
