The verdict

What the panel makes of it.

The Gel-Kayano 29 ranks #15 for comfort among men's sneakers and earns solid agreement between reviewers and buyers: a durable, stability-focused shoe with improved softness via its FF Blast Plus midsole, best suited for heavier runners prioritizing support and longevity, though its heavy weight and poor breathability frustrate those seeking lightweight performance.

Buyers' weakest aspect—fit and sizing issues—aligns with the video reviewers' concern about reduced torsional rigidity and stability feel from the removed plastic truss plate.

In their words

Great stability and wide base; love the shoes. Fit just like my other pair.

Bryan T. · verified purchase · relaygoods.com

I gave this 4 stars because overall, it's still a great running shoe, but with a couple caveats. Personally, I prefer the cushioning of previous versions. The Kayano 29 seems to actually be firmer, which is not better for me personally. I also found that this shoe ran slightly smaller. I got the same size as previous pairs, but find this shoe actually pinches my toes. If I were to buy this again,

Quality Perfectionistbest-in-class

You want a running shoe that's proven, well-reviewed, and does everything competently without major flaws.

Good fit

High buyer rating (4.5/5) with substantial review count and strong consensus on durability and balanced support, but weight and breathability gaps prevent top-tier status.

Simplifierjust works

You want a shoe that works straight out of the box without fussing over fit or special features.

Good fit

True-to-size fit and roomy toe box mean no sizing guesswork; stable support works for both stability-needing and neutral runners without configuration.

Could fit

Competent all-rounder with strong durability, but weight and breathability trade-offs plus mid-tier pricing make it less compelling than lighter alternatives at similar cost.

Frequently asked

What buyers want to know.

  • What is the Gel Kayano 29 good for?

This shoe is built for runners who need moderate stability support and plan to log high mileage. Reviewers say the cushioning is soft and bouncy, the construction is extremely durable, and the fit is roomy for wider feet. It works for both runners who need stability and those with neutral gaits.

  • Is the Gel Kayano 29 a stability shoe?

Yes. The shoe provides stable support without feeling overly rigid, though reviewers note that removing the plastic truss plate in this version reduced the torsional rigidity compared to earlier models. It still works well for runners needing guidance, but with a more dynamic feel.

  • What are the main drawbacks?

The upper mesh lacks breathability and can feel uncomfortable in hot or humid conditions. The shoe is heavier than many runners prefer, and it lacks a natural rocker, so turnover can feel labored. Reviewers are split on whether the reduced stability is a benefit or a downside.

  • Who should buy this shoe?

Runners who prioritize durability, all-around competence, and moderate stability support. It is not a good fit for those seeking a lightweight or highly breathable shoe, or runners who need maximum torsional stability and prefer firmer guidance.

  • How does the comfort compare to previous versions?

Reviewers note the FF Blast Plus midsole adds noticeably more softness and bounce compared to earlier Kayano versions. The generous heel and tongue padding provides comfort on longer runs, though one reviewer found the overall ride competent but not particularly enjoyable.
