About

What it is.

Black Diamond built the Alpine Start Hoody within its climbing and mountaineering line as a wind- and weather-resistant softshell layer meant to disappear into a pack until conditions demand it. The hooded design targets rock climbers and alpinists who move fast over technical terrain, prioritizing stretch, breathability, and packability over bulk or coverage.

Cut close to the body with a climbing-specific hood and without hand pockets, it's built for layering under a harness rather than casual wear. It suits weight-conscious mountain athletes who need a shell that keeps pace with fast-and-light objectives, not those seeking a relaxed fit or protection against sustained heavy weather.

The verdict

The Alpine Start Hoody ranks third among softshell jackets for its exceptional breathability and ultralight construction, earning strong buyer approval (4.6/5) as a packable layering piece, though its slim fit and minimal pockets make it better suited to weight-conscious climbers and alpinists than those needing roomier, more versatile weather protection.

In their words

Purchased my alpine start hoodie in 2014 and it has served me well. An excellent lightweight layer for any situation. Despite how light and thin the material is it blocks wind shockingly well and even offers decent water resistance after 11 years of regular use. Despite many washes and a decade of wear it’s only slightly faded but still works great.

Lawrence · verified purchase · Black Diamond Equipment

not a bad article to have in stow just in case or as an extra layer. it is thin, works best with good base layer. mainly used to take the edge off. does keep in heat when active. considering its packability, it’s harmless to take along when in doubt. I’m 5’10” at 145#s and the small fits great. I can still layer under or over.
