What reviewers say

Distilled from the video reviewers — the score, what they praise, where they push back.?

Spire GTX
across 4 reviews
3.5/5
mixed
Reviewers praise
  • Vibram XS Trek outsole delivers strong traction on rocky, muddy, and loose terrain across all reviewer accounts
  • Gore-Tex Surround technology with midsole aeration channels provides meaningful breathability for a waterproof shoe
  • Reinforced PU toe cap and heel counter offer solid protection from rock strikes and debris
Reviewers push back
  • Narrow toe box causes toe compression on wider feet, even when sized up
  • Thin laces feel fragile under hard tension and come untied frequently even when double-knotted
  • Notable heel-to-toe drop is a drawback for hikers who prefer a flatter, more natural platform
A capable day-hiking shoe with outstanding Vibram traction and Gore-Tex waterproofing, held back by a narrow fit and lace durability concerns.
— best for: Day hikers who move quickly over varied terrain — rock, mud, scree — and want a lightweight, protective shoe with aggressive grip and waterproofing.
X Ultra 4 GTX

4.0/5
divided
Reviewers praise
  • Very lightweight for a waterproof mid boot, under twenty ounces per shoe in most sizes
  • Gore-Tex membrane keeps feet dry without seepage in wet conditions
  • Contagrip sole compound and advanced chassis system provide exceptional traction and lateral stability on mixed terrain
Reviewers push back
  • Uppers prone to blowouts at toe cap and along pinkie side after high mileage
  • Advanced chassis causes arch pain in some users, particularly those with wide feet
  • Limited protection through the ball of the foot compared to beefier boots
Reviewers agree the X Ultra 4 GTX is a lightweight, stable hiking shoe with excellent traction and waterproofing, though some note durability concerns and a narrower fit that may cause arch discomfort.
— best for: Day hikers and fast-packers who want a nimble, waterproof shoe for mixed terrain and value low weight over maximum protection.

Where reviewers split on Spire GTX: Breathability divides reviewers: the brand channel and Sportsman's Warehouse praise the aeration channels as effective, while Yona Trek found foot sweat unchanged compared to non-breathable shoes On X Ultra 4 GTX: One reviewer found comfort phenomenal and ranked it among top trail runners, while another noted specific pain points in the arch area

I’ve had several pairs of these great shoes. My last pair gave me 2,056 miles of use. I started wearing them April 9th, 2021 and just retired them March 20th, 2022. These shoes have been on all my journeys and at work every day. I’ve hiked in the Rockies and Wasatch mountains. They have been my constant companions in slot canyons, washes, and canyoneering. I travel full-time in an RV, visiting every corner of nature I can get to. My ankles have always been a giant disappointment, so I’ve been rocking a pair of Salomon’s tall, heavy, stiff hiking boots forever. They’re not designed for all applications, though, and I’ve been desperate to find a comfortable, lightweight, grippy, and supportive pair of hiking shoes. I’ve tried all the other brands, and Lucky11 · salomon.com
