What reviewers say

Distilled from the video reviewers — the score, what they praise, where they push back.?

Renegade GTX Mid
across 4 reviews
4.0/5
divided
Reviewers praise
  • Vibram Evo outsole grips well on wet rock, mud, loose gravel, snow, and technical terrain
  • Gore-tex liner keeps water out reliably; nubuck leather sheds rain
  • Durable construction holds up to daily wear over multiple years
Reviewers push back
  • Break-in period of roughly ten miles causes toe-box compression and initial stiffness
  • Waterproof membrane traps heat; breathability is poor
  • Toe box width measures only three and a half inches, limiting splay
Reviewers agree the Renegade GTX Mid is a durable, grippy, waterproof boot with excellent traction that requires break-in and runs warm.
— best for: Backpackers carrying heavy loads who hike in wet conditions and value long-term durability over initial comfort should buy this boot.
X Ultra 4 GTX
across 5 reviews
4.0/5
divided
Reviewers praise
  • Very lightweight for a waterproof mid boot, under twenty ounces per shoe in most sizes
  • Gore-Tex membrane keeps feet dry without seepage in wet conditions
  • Contagrip sole compound and advanced chassis system provide exceptional traction and lateral stability on mixed terrain
Reviewers push back
  • Uppers prone to blowouts at toe cap and along pinkie side after high mileage
  • Advanced chassis causes arch pain in some users, particularly those with wide feet
  • Limited protection through the ball of the foot compared to beefier boots
Reviewers agree the X Ultra 4 GTX is a lightweight, stable hiking shoe with excellent traction and waterproofing, though some note durability concerns and a narrower fit that may cause arch discomfort.
— best for: Day hikers and fast-packers who want a nimble, waterproof shoe for mixed terrain and value low weight over maximum protection.

Where reviewers split on Renegade GTX Mid: One reviewer felt no out-of-box comfort and needed ten miles to break in; another called it comfortable after just a couple miles On X Ultra 4 GTX: One reviewer found comfort phenomenal and ranked it among top trail runners, while another noted specific pain points in the arch area

I have put in a hundred miles or so at this point and here are a couple of observations. - There is a break-in period. These boots are stiffer than what I'm used to and took awhile to loosen up. But I can now put in 10-15 miles without comfort issues. - The traction is incredible. I'm very impressed. Snow, loose gravel, slickrock. They excel on all. - So far, snow seems to just fall off the boots Curtis M · backcountry.com

I travel full-time in an RV, visiting every corner of nature I can get to. My ankles have always been a giant disappointment, so I’ve been rocking a pair of Salomon’s tall, heavy, stiff hiking boots forever. They’re not designed for all applications, though, and I’ve been desperate to find a comfortable, lightweight, grippy, and supportive pair of hiking shoes. I’ve tried all the other brands, and Lucky11 · salomon.com
