Forerunner 965 delivers exceptional battery life and sports-focused features that outshine Apple Watch, though the large size and lack of smart features are trade-offs.

Brand claims3/5 true5 promises checked

The Forerunner 965's marketing is honest about its premium training features, GPS accuracy, and AMOLED display quality—all strongly supported by owner and expert data. However, the battery life claim stretches reality: while exceptional for an AMOLED watch, real-world smartwatch mode delivers 5–7 days, not 23, and the titanium bezel's durability falls short of its "built for the long run" positioning.

About

What it is.

Garmin positions the Forerunner 965 within its running watch lineup as a flagship multisport computer, built around GPS accuracy, training-load analytics, and navigation, paired with a display and design language pitched closer to a premium smartwatch than a purely functional sports tool.

It's built for triathletes, runners, and multi-sport athletes who want deep training analytics and accurate GPS without giving up multi-day battery life or display quality. It's not aimed at those chasing maximum battery endurance above all else, sapphire-lens durability, or broad contactless payment support — tradeoffs Garmin accepts in exchange for a more refined, modern flagship feel from an established maker in the category.

The verdict

The Forerunner 965 ranks top for running watches with strong buyer consensus (4.8/5) and delivers an exceptionally bright AMOLED display, lightweight design, and reliable GPS that reviewers acknowledge as competent across the board—though it prioritizes modern looks and training metrics over absolute durability or battery endurance for ultra-distance events.

AI summary of 5 reviews · as of Jul 2026

A strong multi-sport watch with a vivid AMOLED display and impressive battery life for the technology, let down by screen durability concerns and a heavier, slightly more scratch-prone build.

What they praise

  • AMOLED display is bright, highly detailed, and readable in most outdoor conditions, with a significant resolution jump over the predecessor
  • Battery life is remarkably long for an AMOLED display, with reviewers consistently getting five to seven days of real-world use with always-on display enabled
  • Multi-band GPS accuracy is described as industry-leading across multiple reviewers, with clean track capture on foot, bike, and swim
  • Broad multi-sport and triathlon feature set, including wrist-based running dynamics, training load metrics, offline music, and a wide activity library
  • Sleep tracking and morning report are noted as genuinely useful daily health tools

What they knock

  • Gorilla Glass 3 lens has a slight dome or curve that makes screen protectors hard to fit, and some reviewers already noticed surface imperfections after normal use
  • Titanium bezel looks premium but offers limited protection given the raised lens profile
  • Silicone band retains moisture against the wrist after swimming or sweating
  • Garmin Pay compatibility is limited depending on region and bank, frustrating users who relied on contactless payment from previous devices

Garmin Forerunner 970 – Is It $250 Better Than the 965?

TechAvid

How it holds up — after the dust settles

The Forerunner 965 holds up well over extended use, with battery behaviour and display quality proving more durable than initial scepticism suggested, though glass durability remains an open question.

  1. AMOLED battery life

    At launch

Reviewers expected the bright display to drain the battery badly compared to older transflective watches.

    After months

After weeks of real use with always-on display enabled, battery life held closer to Garmin's stated figures than anticipated — roughly six to seven days under mixed brightness conditions.

  2. UI animation and graphics

    At launch

The animated, image-heavy interface looked impressive and fresh on first encounter.

    After months

At least one reviewer found the illustrative imagery — coffee cups, swimmer graphics — felt unnecessary and slightly overdone after living with it daily.

Buyers' weakest aspect (display limitations with AMOLED) aligns with video reviewers' concern about the flat screen design and Gorilla Glass being more scratch-prone than alternatives.

In their words

I’ve trained with this watch for 5 years — 6 half Ironmans, 1 full Ironman, countless pickleball battles, and more golf rounds than I should probably admit. It’s basically been my fitness parole officer the entire time. I dig my Garmin Forerunner 965. The battery life is fantastic, and the ability to load workouts directly onto the watch is a game changer.

RockStar · verified purchase · garmin.com

I got this watch from another customer who wasn't using his anymore, and it was certainly an upgrade over the FR35, which had only basic features. I think the biggest annoyance of this watch is that it DOES NOT have an option for a permanently on, full brightness feature (even when doing activities), which is really annoying for me.

Frequently asked

What buyers want to know.

  • What makes the Forerunner 965 display stand out?

Reviewers say the AMOLED screen is significantly brighter and more detailed than older transflective designs, with excellent outdoor readability and vivid colors. The watch is also lighter and thinner than previous models despite having a larger screen.

  • How accurate is the GPS on the Forerunner 965?

Reviewers note the multi-band GPS maintains industry-leading accuracy across swim, bike, and run activities.

  • Garmin 965 vs 955 Solar: Key Differencesfrom Facebook

The 965 has a modern AMOLED display with vivid colors and better screen-to-body ratio, while the 955 uses older transflective technology. The 955 delivers longer battery life. Reviewers are split on whether the display upgrade justifies the premium price, since both watches offer similar training features and metrics.

  • Who is the Forerunner 965 best for?

Reviewers say it suits runners and triathletes who want serious training metrics and mapping in a lighter, modern-looking package and can accept good—but not maximum—battery life. It is not ideal for ultra-endurance athletes needing peak battery performance or those prioritizing the most durable materials like titaniu…

  • Is the Forerunner 965 overkill?

Reviewers agree the 965 delivers excellent display quality, strong GPS accuracy, and comprehensive training metrics, but excels at nothing individually and commands a premium over the still-capable 955. Whether it is overkill depends on whether the AMOLED upgrade and lighter design matter to you.

  • What are the durability concerns with the Forerunner 965?

Reviewers note the flat screen design with minimal bezel protection makes the Gorilla Glass lens more prone to scratches than recessed or sapphire alternatives. The plastic case also scratches more visibly than titanium or steel competitors.
