Owners love the immediate comfort and minimal break-in, but durability divides them—some get years of reliable use while others see sole wear within a year.

Brand claims1/5 true5 promises checked

KEEN's marketing emphasizes comfort and durability, and the comfort claims hold up well with strong owner satisfaction (4.5/5 break-in and fit scores). However, the durability guarantees—particularly around delamination prevention and outsole abrasion resistance—are significantly undermined by a 3.5/5 durability score and consistent owner reports of sole wear within a year, making the "most durable Targhee yet" claim questionable. The PFAS-free claim is unverified by the available review data.

All sides but one land high — Holds up — with one check: the outsole durability claim is overstated.

About

What it is.

Targhee IV belongs to KEEN's line of trail-oriented hiking footwear, built for on- and off-trail walking where fit and underfoot support matter. Its Original Fit last gives the forefoot room to splay, paired with a padded tongue and collar for a broken-in feel. Underfoot, a direct-attach, air-injected Luftcell midsole and removable Luftcell insole work together for sustained cushioning across long distances.

Construction relies on KEEN.FUSION, which bonds the upper to the sole without adhesives to guard against delamination, while the abrasion-resistant KEEN.RUGGED outsole and multi-directional lug pattern handle varied terrain. A heel-capture system and stability shank add structural support. The upper is premium nubuck leather with a breathable mesh lining, made without PFAS.

The verdict

The Targhee IV delivers genuine comfort straight out of the box with minimal break-in, earning solid buyer approval at 4.4/5 stars, though sole durability proves inconsistent—some owners report years of reliable wear while others encounter significant tread wear within twelve months. At $160–$180 it suits beginners seeking immediate wearability, but durability expectations should remain realistic.

In their words

I always like to have a sturdy, waterproof pair of trail sneakers around as I find them very handy in warmer months for assorted tramping around. Finding a set that meets these simple needs and fits well is harder than it would seem. Having never owned a pair of Keen shoes, I decided to give them a try because of the qualifications and the advertised forefoot roominess.

Brandon R. · verified purchase · keenfootwear.com

Great light weight boots for everyday use. Comfortable fit right out of the box. My only complaint is I wish that the sole was more robust and lasted a little bit longer. Walk about 8 km every day over a variety of terrain in summer and winter conditions. Soles wear out in about a year to the point that it is dangerous walking on snow and ice. Other than that they are great.
