The marketing emphasizes the Renegade's comfort and durability heritage, which holds for waterproofing and initial comfort (4.8/5 and 4.2/5 respectively), but the newer Evo version materially undercuts durability claims with thin soles (2.5/5 durability score) that owners say match worn-out older pairs, and sizing inconsistency undermines comfort reliability.

All sides but one land high — Holds up — with one check: the endurance claim is overstated.

The verdict

What the panel makes of it.

The Renegade GTX Lo ranks eighth for waterproof hiking shoes, with buyers confirming its waterproofing and initial comfort at $240–$250, though the newer Evo version's thinner sole has raised durability concerns among existing owners. Size up by half, and expect this shoe to handle day hikes well, but extended mileage may expose its reduced sole thickness.

Buyers' weakest aspect—durability and sole thinness—directly echoes video reviewers' concerns about the Evo version's reduced sole thickness compared to previous generations.

In their words

These shoes are comfortable and well built. I ordered them a half size larger than my usual size to account for long walks and swollen feet. Perfect fit for me. They look as though they’ll last for years but they feel almost like slippers when you put them on. I’m wearing them now on a trip to Norway and Scotland and have had no issues.

Really disappointed to find out that this new Evo version of the Renegade GTX Lo is awful. My old renegade shoes lasted over 5 years and the new Evo has soles that are just as thin as the worn out pair! You can feel the ground surface as if you were wearing flip flops. In the picture, my old shoes are on the left; the new Evo is on the right.

What the data shows

Comfort scores 4.2/5 and owners report initial comfort, but sizing inconsistency (3/5) and fit variability require half-size adjustments, limiting the reliability of the comfort enhancement.
