Both buyers and critics note the short handle as a trade-off: reviewers see it as beginner-friendly but harder to control, while critics flag it as a grip/control concern.

In their words

Our family just started wet shaving because we were sick of the cartridges that are not only expensive, they were just a source of ingrown hairs and the razor plugged up easily! This Merkur was a solid recommendation. This is a great all purpose razor made of good materials that the whole family could learn on. It is made of brass, not that cheap pot metal. It will last you a good long time! I hav

This is very much a beginner razor. Even when shaving in a rush it’s very difficult to accidentally knick yourself. I do find that this razor does not give a close shave. If you want a five aclock shadow by noon this razor is the way to go. I find the short handle makes the razor harder to control. I assume the short handle makes it easier to hit the right shaving angle when you’re just learning.
