About

What it is.

Pegasus 42 sits within Nike's long-running Pegasus line of everyday training shoes, built around a curved, full-length Air Zoom unit paired with a ReactX foam midsole for cushioned, energy-returning strides. A mesh upper wraps the foot with added room through the toes and forefoot, while an updated Waffle outsole with high-abrasion rubber and flex grooves handles traction and flexibility across varied pavement and mixed surfaces.

The shoe uses lace-up fastening and carries a 10mm heel-to-toe drop, with toe spring shaping the curve of the toe box for a smoother transition through the gait cycle. It's suited to runners logging regular training miles who want a cushioned, versatile daily-wear shoe rather than a racing-specific or trail-focused build.

The verdict

Buyers and AI engines align on the Pegasus 42 as a solid entry-level running shoe, praising its cushioning and responsiveness across varied activities, though the fit remains inconsistent—some find the toe box adequately wider while others report it still runs narrow.

In their words

I have to give it to Nike. Pegasus 42 is a great shoe. I thought Pegasus 41 was a good shoe and the upgrades to 42 made this shoe superior. Its just the right amount of cushion for short to medium runs, lifting weights, plyometrics and HIIT training. The traction is great for all of the above. I really like the responsiveness of the ZoomX. They added more cushion at the forfoot (balls of the feet)

Pegasus 40 was my favorite running shoe, ever. Bought 2 pairs, should have bought more. Pegasus 41 was too narrow. I had hope for 42 because Nike stated they made the toe box roomier. But this shoe is even tighter than the 41. The toebox of the Pegasus 42 is almost 10mm narrower than the Pegasus 40 and the gusseted tongue makes the shoe too tight on my arches. Too tight all around.
