The verdict

What the panel makes of it.

The Sawtooth X Low Waterproof ranks among the better hiking shoes for wide feet and delivers genuine comfort and grip that buyers consistently praise, but stitching failures and premature sole degradation undermine its waterproof claims and long-term durability at the $180–$185 price point.

In their words

I'm in the mountains, hike daily and usually keep five or so boots/shoes in rotation. Different tools for different jobs. I had a pair of Bridgers about five years ago and they crapped out way too soon. Saw these on sale, they had the structure i was looking for and went for it.

TJF · verified purchase · REI

I really wanted to like these hiking shoes as they were recommended by the REI sales associate, but unfortunately they didn’t hold up. After moderate hikes, the stitching started coming apart where the rubber meets the fabric on the side near the front of the shoe. This is a pretty critical area for durability, and I expected better quality—especially for shoes marketed as trail-ready.

What the data shows

While owners praise comfort and fit (4.2/5) and traction (4/5), critical durability failures in stitching (1.8/5) and sole longevity (2.5/5) mean the waterproof version does not deliver the same reliable performance as the non-waterproof model.
