Buyers4.657 ratings

Owners love the exceptional breathability, fit, and stretch that make it a versatile all-season layer, but pocket design flaws—excessive mesh and poor retention—frustrate some users.

Brand claims1/2 true2 promises checked

The marketing claim about breathability is well-supported by owner data (4.8/5 score), and the 4-way stretch is confirmed by consistent praise. However, most technical specs—Fortius 1.0 fabric, wind/water resistance, UPF 50+, and hood design—go unverified in the available reviews. A significant gap emerges around pocket design, where owners report frustration (2.5/5) that contradicts the implied quality of the overall product.

About

What it is.

Gamma Lightweight Hoody sits within Arc'teryx's Gamma softshell family, positioned as the most stripped-down weight option in that line. It's built from Fortius softshell fabric with recycled nylon content and 4-way stretch, constructed as a hooded jacket rather than a shell or insulated piece, with a fitted StormHood and a regular cut meant to allow layering underneath.

It's built for hiking, climbing, and moving across mixed terrain in mild-to-warmer conditions, where wind resistance, breathability, and UPF sun protection matter more than heavy weather defense. It suits wearers who want a trusted, established-brand hoody they can rely on across varied outdoor activity without extra bulk.

The verdict

The AI panel ranks this softshell hoody at the top for its category, and buyers largely agree, praising its breathability, stretch, and versatile layering fit at 4.6/5 stars; the main drawback is poor pocket design that loses small items.

In their words

I want a softshell that breathes first and foremost. This Gamma Lightweight is excellent in this. That makes it a 4 season jacket- more layers in winter, less in summer, but it wears all day long because it breathes (IMHO). After that, the fit is a perfect Medium- 5'11" and 180lbs. Can layer a bit, but fine with a light layer too. Stretch and comfort are best in any of the many jackets I've had.

Smitty · verified purchase · arcteryx.com

Great to wear for breezy days and hikes or by the beach, light and breathable. The pockets are a bit annoying when wearing the jacket open, there is too much mesh at the top of the pocket and it sticks out from the inside of the jacket. The square non-tailored pocket shape also results in items easily falling out when sitting down if the zips are open.
