AI summary of 4 reviews · as of May 2026
Reviewers agree the Renegade GTX Mid is a durable, grippy, waterproof boot with excellent traction that requires break-in and runs warm.
Where reviewers disagree: One reviewer felt no out-of-box comfort and needed ten miles to break in; another called it comfortable after just a couple miles; The rockered sole design went unnoticed by one tester but is marketed as a feature; One reviewer wished for a larger rubber toe cap; another noted reinforced leather compensates
Reviewers splitWhat they praise
- Vibram Evo outsole grips well on wet rock, mud, loose gravel, snow, and technical terrain
- Gore-tex liner keeps water out reliably; nubuck leather sheds rain
- Durable construction holds up to daily wear over multiple years
- Stable platform with good ankle support for backpacking with heavy loads
- Deep heel cup and midsole design lock the foot in place
What they knock
- Break-in period of roughly ten miles causes toe-box compression and initial stiffness
- Waterproof membrane traps heat; breathability is poor
- Toe box width measures only three and a half inches, limiting splay
- Mud clings to the outsole more than competing boots

What owners single out
Buyers' weakest aspect—toe box fit and width—directly overlaps the video reviewers' finding that the toe box measures only 3.5 inches, limiting splay and causing pinching even in the wide version.
In their words
“I have put in a hundred miles or so at this point and here are a couple of observations. - There is a break-in period. These boots are stiffer than what I'm used to and took awhile to loosen up. But I can now put in 10-15 miles without comfort issues. - The traction is incredible. I'm very impressed. Snow, loose gravel, slickrock. They excel on all. - So far, snow seems to just fall off the boots ”

“No idea why others reviewed this boot so highly, maybe they just didn't use it long enough before reviewing. For me the front rand separated at around mile 150 and side stitching disintegrated on BOTH boots at about mile 250. I had to do emergency sewing on the trail. More side stitching disintegrated at around mile 300 and not waterproofed any more. They are now in the trash heap at mile 350. I r”

Frequently asked
What buyers want to know.
Are Lowa Renegade GTX Mids good for hiking?
Reviewers say the Renegade GTX Mid is a durable, waterproof boot with excellent traction on wet rock, mud, loose gravel, snow, and technical terrain. It works best for backpackers carrying heavy loads in wet conditions who value long-term durability.
Are Lowa Renegade Evo Mid GTX good in snow?
Reviewers confirm the Vibram Evo outsole grips well on snow. The Gore-Tex liner keeps water out reliably, making it suitable for wet winter hiking.
What should I know before buying this boot?
The boot requires a break-in period of roughly ten miles before it feels right, and reviewers note the waterproof membrane makes the boot run warm with poor breathability. The toe box is narrow at three and a half inches, so it is not a good choice if you need width.
How durable is the Renegade GTX Mid?
Reviewers confirm the boot's durable construction holds up to daily wear over multiple years. The deep heel cup and midsole design lock the foot in place, providing stable support for heavy backpacking.
Who should not buy this boot?
Hikers who want immediate out-of-box comfort, need a wide toe box, or prioritize breathability in warm weather should look elsewhere. The break-in period and heat retention are trade-offs for waterproofing and durability.
