The Roomba j7+ delivers on obstacle avoidance and self-empty convenience, with quick setup and a compact base that owners appreciate. About

What it is.

Roomba j7+ is a robotic vacuum from iRobot's Roomba line, built around Precision Vision navigation and iRobot Genius software to identify and steer around everyday floor hazards like cords, pet waste, and stray socks rather than requiring a room to be tidied first. It uses Imprint Smart Mapping to let owners define which rooms get cleaned and when, save multiple floor maps, and set exclusion or cleaning zones for specific areas.

Within the Roomba family, it's positioned for households wanting hands-off, scheduled cleaning that adapts over time — offering seasonal cleaning suggestions and a multi-step brush and suction system for pet hair and everyday debris. It suits pet owners who value obstacle avoidance and routine upkeep more than maximum suction or dense-clutter navigation.

The verdict

The Roomba j7+ ranks first for apartments thanks to its pet-waste detection and compact self-empty base, but buyers and reviewers diverge sharply on cleaning power—while owners praise convenience, both groups flag heavy hair tangling and inconsistent dirt pickup that demand frequent manual maintenance.

AI summary of 5 reviews · as of Jul 2026

Reviewers agree the j7+ brings genuinely useful obstacle avoidance and a compact, reliable auto-empty base, though its raw suction and clutter navigation lag behind the hype.

What they praise

  • Camera-based obstacle avoidance reliably detects and avoids cords, toys, and pet waste
  • Auto-empty base is compact, quiet, and resists clogging even after extended use
  • Strong carpet cleaning performance thanks to dual rubber brush roll design
  • Effective edge cleaning and good build quality with a solid, appliance-like design
  • App offers useful features like keep-out zones and room-specific voice commands

What they knock

  • Low airflow and suction compared to competitors, with only one suction setting
  • Struggles with coverage in cluttered rooms and areas near the charging base
  • Hair tends to tangle around brush rolls rather than collect in the dustbin
  • Mapping and navigation can look jerky or less polished than rivals despite good coverage

I bought this product before Christmas. So far, it's been terrible. It doesn't pick up dirt and its mop function is even worse. If you didn't get the report, you wouldn't even know if it ran or not. It's useless. I have set it to two passes and a deeper cleaning, yet it does nothing. It cleans the carpet moderately well, leaving hair and clumps.

Simplifierjust works

You want a robot vacuum that works out of the box with minimal fuss.

Good fit

Reviewers praise setup and app ease, compact design fits under furniture, quiet operation, and self-empty base means hands-off maintenance—minimal configuration needed.

Reliability-Seekerproven & safe

You want a proven, low-risk robot vacuum from an established maker.

Good fit

iRobot is mature and trusted, 4.1/5 from 2186 reviews shows broad consensus, and the j7+ is a settled product with no successor detected—strong reliability signals.

Premium Connoisseurbrand & status

You value iRobot's established brand and want a flagship self-emptying system.

Could fit

iRobot is a recognized leader, the j7+ is a flagship model with premium self-empty base, and the brand carries prestige—though measured specs lag competitors at this price tier.

Value-Maximizerprice first

You want a robot vacuum that handles pet hair without breaking the bank.

Could fit

At ~$625, it costs 3–4× more than capable entry-level rivals (Roomba 694, Cube) yet offers no clear advantage in dirt pickup or hair handling—actually worse on both counts. Consider Roomba 694.

Quiet operation and pet-waste detection show care, but the product is utilitarian; jerky navigation, heavy brush maintenance, and low suction undermine the delight factor. Consider Q7 Max+.

Strong obstacle avoidance and quiet operation are offset by low suction, heavy hair tangling, jerky navigation, and inconsistent coverage—clear quality compromises vs. top-tier rivals. Consider Q7 Max+.

Frequently asked

What buyers want to know.

  • Is the Roomba j7+ good for pet hair?

Reviewers found it mixed on pet hair. The dual rubber brush system delivers strong carpet cleaning, but human hair tangles heavily around the brush rolls and requires manual cleaning after each run. Reviewers are split on whether it picks up pet hair tufts effectively or just pushes them around.

  • What is the difference between Roomba j7 and j7+?

The material provided covers only the j7+, which includes a self-empty base that holds up to 60 days of debris in replaceable bags and rarely clogs with pet hair. The j7+ also has a front camera for detecting and avoiding pet waste, cords, and obstacles.

  • Is the Roomba j7+ worth it?

It is worth it if you have pets and want strong obstacle avoidance with hands-off maintenance in an apartment or smaller space. It is not worth it if your home has heavy furniture clutter, you want high suction power compared to competitors, or you need a robot that handles long hair without regular brush cleaning.

  • Does the Roomba j7+ navigate well?

Reviewers are split on navigation. Some praised it as good or better than previous Roombas, but others found the initial mapping jerky and less methodical compared to ceiling-camera models, with coverage that degrades noticeably around furniture and skips entire sections of rooms.
