What reviewers say

Distilled from the video reviewers — the score, what they praise, where they push back.?

Surface Headphones 2
across 5 reviews
3.5/5
divided
Reviewers praise
  • Rotating dials for volume and noise-cancelling control are intuitive and smooth
  • Comfortable ear cushions allow extended wear without fatigue
  • Multi-point Bluetooth works exceptionally well across multiple devices
Reviewers push back
  • Active noise cancellation is good but not as strong as Sony or Bose competitors
  • Touch controls are oversensitive and trigger accidentally
  • Headband padding pulls hair and is less comfortable than the ear cushions
A comfortable, well-designed headphone with intuitive dial controls and solid features that competes respectably but falls short of the noise-cancelling leaders from Sony and Bose.
— best for: Someone who values intuitive controls and multi-device connectivity over best-in-class noise cancellation and wants a comfortable daily headphone.
WH-1000XM5
across 5 reviews
3.7/5
Reviewers praise
  • Outstanding noise cancellation that blocks low and high frequencies effectively, surpassing most competitors
  • Excellent sound quality out of the box with useful EQ customization in the app
  • Exceptionally light and comfortable for extended wear, with soft ear pads and plush materials
Reviewers push back
  • Non-folding design creates a bulky case that's cumbersome to carry compared to the foldable predecessor
  • Transparency mode sounds muffled and underwater-like, falling short of competitors
  • Lacks modern Bluetooth codecs like aptX Lossless and omits USB-C audio support
Reviewers agree the WH-1000XM5 delivers world-class noise cancellation and excellent sound quality, but the non-folding design and oversized case make it less travel-friendly than its predecessor.
— best for: These suit office workers and commuters who prioritize maximum noise cancellation and all-day comfort in stationary environments and don't mind the large case.

Where reviewers split on Surface Headphones 2: Clamping force divides opinion: some appreciate the secure snug fit while others find it tighter than preferred On WH-1000XM5: Some find the sound signature bass-heavy and mid-forward requiring EQ tweaks, while others consider it excellent as-is

I bought these for my partner for Christmas. She only has them connected to her iPad so she can watch rubbish TV without having me loudly criticise her taste in TV. She is pleased with them, says they are comfortable and said she hasn't had to charge them yet, but I felt I needed to try them myself before writing this review. These are hands-down the best headphones I have ever bought. I am a musician and music producer, so would say I have a sensitive ear to sound quality. The bass is superbly clean, and the trebles are so crisp, it’s like sitting in a room watching a live performance of the artist. The touch screen functions are incredible - the entirety of the right flat side is a touch board! Volume, skipping a tra flyawayhome · sony.co.uk
