Issey Miyake founded his Tokyo house in 1971, bringing Japanese design to global fashion. He created pleated garments that moved with the body, rejecting rigid tailoring. The 1989 Pleats Please line became his signature: fabric folded permanently into countless vertical creases. This technique meant garments could fold small, travel anywhere, and spring back unwrinkled. Miyake died in 2022, but his studio continues producing clothes and fragrances across Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
