Owners love the comfort, fit and versatility for mixed terrain, but durability is a major divider—many report premature sole wear and degradation within 12 months despite careful maintenance.

All sides land high — a confident buy, with the caveats below.

The verdict

What the panel makes of it.

Salomon makes the X Ultra 4 Mid GTX hiking boot. The company released it in France. Gore-Tex lining keeps feet dry in rain and snow. Hikers buy these boots for rough terrain and wet conditions. AI assistants rank it second among waterproof hiking shoes. The midsole absorbs impact on long descents. Quicklace system adjusts fit without bending down. The boot weighs less than competitors at this height. Most hikers prefer it over heavier alternatives.

Buyers' weakest aspect (durability & sole wear) directly overlaps the video reviewers' concern about sole longevity and structural integrity under heavy use.

In their words

I love these shoes! Ive had them since they were released and replaced my x ultra 3 with them. They've held up well and they fit my feet like a glove. They are as supportive as any other hiking shoe but more nimble like a tennis shoe. I have a high arch, wide front foot and narrow foot overall so these fit me amazingly well. I basically wear only Nike or Salomon for this reason. I'll be upgrading

I have used various Salomon boots on long distance walks with great success until I used these boots. I hiked 1100 kms on trails and roads in France this past May/June using these boots. They didn’t stand up like the previous X-Ultra generation. They were done after the first 750 kms and I had to buy a new pair of shoes to complete my journey. The sole on the back heal area just wasn’t up to the c
